(Day 26) 26th April - Managing Others Stress and The Workload

2 days until our final pitch. We had a morning meeting with Nick, an expert for our CPD specialism. We presented what we had, the original powerpoint but there were no further adjustments. Nick, gave plenty of useful feedback and commented on the presentation. He stated how we should focus on being hard hitting, communicate visually and bring design management to the CPD. This then lead back to our previous discussion. I could see frustration and impatience on Hannahs face and tone. There was length debates, discussions and wasted time.

Reflecting on Jo Owens (2018) How to Manage, she writes on using EQ, PQ and IQ to resolve conflict.

EQ: empathise, remove the emotional heat of the moment.

PQ: agree the common problem, align agendas.

IQ: solve the problem and agree the way forward.

By using this method, I was able to move the group forward and get going with the task at hand. I empathised with Hannah's frustration, she later mentioned she is not used to working last minute, usually completing work a week in advance. This is fair as everyone has their own way of working and standards. I highlighted the common problem, the presentation was not done. We had two versions, both became increasingly messy and confusing. I solved the problem by creating a brand new powerpoint, copying over the notes, structure and layout and we all agreed to then work on this with consistency. In relation to this conflict resolution method, you can correlate with Louise Evans chair theory. By moving through EQ, PQ and IQ, you move through the three chairs: green, blue and purple.

The team log for today was

Based on this feedback, there was an unneeded prolonged discussion about how to do this. Imaani took charge, made a new presentation and got the project on track.

We have finally got a presentation and now everyone is writing their speeches to add to the notes. For a lengthy practice tomorrow evening.

It has been a day of lots of debate and very long!

It was evident I was understanding and practicing skills involving effective management. By taking initiative and control, I lead the group into productivity. Hannah also messaged me saying "What a day! Thank you for being you!".

With rehearsal and combing through the last bits, we will be ready to smash our presentation!
