(Day 24) 23rd April - Another Difficult Discussion
So, late last night Tanisha created a whole new presentation on Canva. I saw this on the night and replied. I really liked it. There were a few things missing but I just thought we will address it tomorrow. However, at this point I had not worked on my slides on the original presentation (or even looked if I'm honest haha).
In the morning, Hannah made a very valid point. "Just to clarify before I write this I’m not having a go or trying to start an argument, it may come across that way as a message, but i will be writing about it in my reflection log - following the numerous discussions over the last few weeks where its been said that decisions are made without group consensus and it causes a problem with communication, even though those actions/tasks have been completed following meetings where decisions where made openly through the conversation. Our learning from that was the communication was important and we needed to be better at it and that it would be much better once we were all sat round a table to communicate move effectively. Which we did on Wednesday, I thought the session went well and we created the presentation together around the table, agreeed the actions and went away to work on it ready for Wednesday. But now we have a completely new one on canva. To me, it feels like we’ve just taken two steps back and forgotten what we’ve learnt?? So more importantly before I do anymore work today and waste time - we need to decide which one are we using?"
After reflecting, I agreed with Hannah. Our previous difficult discussion was about lack of communication and this felt random to the rest fo the group. A debate began on the design of our presentation, as I knew I was going to be away at the weekend, I said I don't mind, I will go with the majority. I remain in the green chair, listening to Hannah and Tanisha's points whilst also asserting my views (blue chair) and then placing myself in the purple chair.
Owens, J (2018) notes conflict is normal, of day-to-day for organisations and most managers. The author describes dsyfunctional conflict in two 'flavours' which is hot war and cold war. A cold war is based on politics and are a reality of management. Hot wars are the emotional conflicts, instant reactions and in the moment.
This conflict today felt like both. It was two members with conflicting views (cold war, this is always going to happen in a work place). However, the discussion grew heated and you could read the frustration from both sides (hot war). Previously, I was amid the hot war, I was reacting emotionally. This time, I took time to read the messages and think about how to overcome this obstacle. I loved Tanisha's design but at this point we needed to focus on the content, I stated we should go with majority and work from there. Anahita and Hannah wanted to work with familiar powerpoint, which was fair. The discussion ended on me stating we should all work on our own content, regroup on Monday and do this together.
